Purple Tangs require a large, mature saltwater aquarium with plenty of swimming space and well-established biological filtration.

  • Recommended aquarium size: 100 gallons / approximately 380 litres or larger
  • Water type: Marine/saltwater
  • Temperature: Approximately 24–27°C
  • pH: Approximately 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: Approximately 1.020–1.025 specific gravity
  • Aquascape: Provide open swimming areas alongside live rock and hiding places.
  • Filtration: Strong biological and mechanical filtration with good water movement
  • Reef compatibility: Generally reef compatible

A mature aquarium is particularly important because Purple Tangs are active swimmers and grazers and can be sensitive to sudden changes in water quality.

Adult Purple Tangs can reach approximately 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) in length, depending on conditions and individual development.

With excellent care, appropriate nutrition and stable water quality, Purple Tangs can live for many years in captivity, with some individuals reaching well over a decade.

Because size and growth can vary, aquarium planning should focus on the fish’s adult size, rather than its initial size when acquired.

Purple Tangs are active, confident and territorial marine fish.

They spend much of their time swimming through the aquarium and grazing on algae. They can become aggressive toward other tangs and similarly shaped fish, particularly when introduced into an established territory.

Suitable tank mates

They can generally be kept with a variety of peaceful or semi-aggressive marine species, including:

  • Clownfish
  • Gobies
  • Blennies
  • Cardinalfish
  • Wrasses
  • Anthias
  • Many reef-safe community fish

Avoid overcrowding and carefully consider compatibility when keeping multiple tangs or other surgeonfish.

Tip: Introducing compatible fish at the appropriate time and providing sufficient swimming space can help reduce territorial conflicts.
